Karkkidakam popularly known as Ramayana Masam (month). Karkkidakam is the last month in Malayalam Calendar or Kollavarsham. The Sanskrit word Karkkidaka means cancer .Karkkidakam is referred as the Ramayana Masam, which starts on 17th July and ends on 16th August. As the name specify, this holy month is destined for undertaking pious Vratham and recitation of Adhyathma Ramayanam Kilippattu: the epic life of Lord Sree Rama, which is the most virtuous and conversant contribution from Thunjathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, called as the Father of Malayalam Language

E K Bharath Bhushan is new Kerala Chief Secretary

The present Special Secretary and financial adviser to the Union Ministry of Steel, E.K.Bharath Bhushan will be appointed as the state's Chief Secretary. The decision was arrived at a cabinet meeting held on  Wednesday. 

Bharath Bhushan will succeed the present Chief Secretary of Kerala K.Jose Syriac, whose tenure in the post expires on April 30.  An IAS officer of 1979 batch, Bharath Bhushan will be able to continue in the post till January 31, 2015. 

As Director General of Civil Aviation, Bharath Bhushan had adopted several cleansing measures in the department as well as in the ministry; expelling pilots with fake license being one among them. 

Holiday for MILAD-UN-NABI has been changed in Kerala Circle

Closed holiday for MILAD-UN-NABI or ID-E-MILAD(Birthday of Prophet Mohammed) in Kerala Circle will be on 24 January 2013.

Earlier it was declared on 25.01.2013,now it has been changed from 25 January to 24th January as the Kerala Government changed the holiday to 24.01.2013.

Contributory pension scheme for new Kerala govt employees

Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala has decided to introduce contributory pension scheme for those joining the government services from next financial year, even as the CPI-M led LDF opposition expressed its reservation on the new scheme. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, speaking to reporters after a special cabinet meeting, said a government order in this regard has been issued by the Finance department and the new scheme would be applicable only to those who join the service after April, 2013. "There will not be any difficulty for the present employees," he said. Except Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura, all other states in the country have introduced contributory pension scheme, Chandy pointed out as a justification for the UDF Government decision to go for contributory pension. To a question on raising the retirement age of staff from 56 years to 60 years, Chandy said it was a matter that needs a consensus. 'Government will take a decision on retirement age only after taking the youths into confidence', he said. The government faced strong protest not only from LDF Opposition and its Youth outfits, but also from Youth congress in the state when the issue of retirement age came up for a discussion in the last assembly session. Opposing the government decision, LDF Convener Vaikom Viswam said LDF would support the agitation of trade unions against the new pension scheme. 'It is a way of exploiting labour force with a view to help corporates', he added. Meanwhile, DFYI, the youth wing of CPI-M, said government decision was a challenge to the future generation.

Kerala govt hints at raising retirement age

Thiruvananthapuram, July 16, 2012(PTI): The Congress-led UDF government in Kerala today favoured raising the retirement age in the state services from 56 to 60 but the proposal triggered instant protest from opposition parties and youth outfits including the Youth Congress.

While replying to the debate on Appropriation Bill in the Assembly, Finance Minister K M Mani said the state’s fiscal position warranted raising the superannuation age as payment of retirement benefits and pension entailed a big commitment on the exchequer.

While the state services had about 5.3 lakh employees there were also over five lakh pensioners. Meeting the pension and retirement commitments cast a huge burden on the exchequer every year, he said.

Kerala state services had the lowest retirement in the country while it had the highest life expectancy, Mani said.
The state would also have to go for contributory pension scheme soon, he said.

New Chief Secretary(Kerala)- K Jayakumar

The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to promote Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar as Chief Secretary.

Mr. Jayakumar is currently holding charge of Home, Vigilance, Dewaswom, Inter-State Waters, and Agriculture Production Commissioner. He is also functioning as chairman of the high-power committee for implementation of the Sabarimala master plan.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting that the government would take a decision on relieving Mr. Jayakumar of some of his current responsibilities as he assumed charge as Chief Secretary in place of P. Prabakaran who was retiring on March 31. The Cabinet commended the service of Mr. Prabakaran.

Mr. Jayakumar began his career as a lecturer in Kerala University. He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1978 and served as Collector, Director of Tourism, Secretary (Tourism), Secretary (Culture), and Secretary (General Education). He worked as Managing Director of the Kerala Film Development Corporation and Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University. Between 2002 and 2007, he had been on deputation to the Centre as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Culture.

The Kerala government has raised the retirement age of state government employees from 55 to 56 years. Amid strong protests from young turks of the Opposition benches, finance minister KM Mani announced this in his 10th Budget speech on Monday.

Stating the reason for this, he said the average life expectancy of the state had increased to 72 years and the retirement age of central government employees was 60

Presenting the budget in the assembly today, Mr.K.M.Mani said that the enhancement of the age of superannuation of state government employees and teachers to 56 years from the existing 55 years.
